Dear World President and Vice Presidents,
Dear friends of OMEP,

On behalf of OMEP Japan, I would like thank you for the warm words of solidarity.  Your supporting messages to us encouraged not only our members but also Japanese as a whole.  We receive warm messages and support from all over the world, and we all appreciate such kindness from the global community.

As you may have seen in the news, the northern parts of Japan were hit by the earthquake, and have heavy casualties by Tsunami.  Everyday, we all hopethat children and their families are well and sound.   Most of OMEP members in Japan seem to stay safe, working for well-being of children, but details are not yet clear at this moment.  I would like to inform you more when everything settles down.

Despite of this tragic incident, our early childhood community works for children and their families.  As OMEP Japan, we are doing our best to serve our children and our society as much as possible.  We may ask for your support when needed.

Again, we would like to express our gratitude for your support, and are looking forward to communicating with you again.

Sincerely yours,
Toshiko KANEDA

Dear Doreen,

Thank you for your offer to support Japan regarding the earthquake.
Currently, we are suffering a great deal of damage from the earthquake, tsunami, and the accident of Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.

As OMEP Japan, we would like to inform you about activities in Japan.
Right after the earthquake, victims are supporting each other at stricken areas.  Medical doctors, nurses, teachers, caregivers, and clinical psychologists are helping people at evacuation areas, even though they are themselves victims of the earthquake.  Childcare corners are opened by the caregivers or teachers in those evacuation camps.
As soon as roads and transportations became available, non-profit organizations and people who experienced earthquake (Kobe, Niigata-Chuetsu, etc.) entered affected areas to volunteer for them.
There is one whole town that evacuated from the nuclear power plant to Tokyo area, and over 500 volunteers came to the camp.  Caregivers take turns to give childcare for children of the evacuees there.

Relief supplies are distributed to the areas, such as diapers, formula milk, etc.  Business sectors are also supporting them.  Foreign governments are really helpful, sending rescue teams and relief aids for us.

Organizations of early childhood education and care, like other academic societies, started collecting funds and giving support for victims utilizing their professional resources.
As OMEP Japan, we are going to discuss how we can support them uniquely as our organization.  We will have an executive committee meeting on March 26 for that topic.  At this moment, we are thinking of releasing a web site posting information for foreign children and parents residing in Japan.  Information is necessary for such population because it is crucial to have information as well as supplies for daily lives.  Since Red Cross and other national organizations are collecting funds for the earthquake victims, on the top of governmental aids, monetary support seems to be secondary to our agenda.

For the world-wide OMEP, we would like to have your support uniquely as a professional organization for children.  We appreciate you are thinking of collecting funds for Japan, and it will give encouragement for our children and their parents.  We hope to propose some useful ideas for supporting our children, and we will inform you again for concrete ideas or strategies.  Till then, please give us some time for consideration.

For now, we are watching news about the nuclear accident.  We still have a few times of aftershocks everyday.  It may require some more time to realize what is needed for our people, particularly young children.  We all hope that everything calms down, and to have children’s smiles and laughs come back again without worries.

Thank you again for your concerns and solidarity.  We feel that we are not alone for this critical moment, and would like to work for children together with our friends of OMEP.

Sincerely yours,
Toshiko KANEDA
